Evangeline Atwood was born in 1906 in Sitka, Alaska. When she returned to Alaska after college in 1935, she was active in and organized many community groups. She even authored several books most of them centered around Alaska.
In 1950 she served as president and state director of Anchorage’s League of Women Voters. She was the former president of the Alaska Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Anchorage Women’s Clubs, and the Alaska Statehood Association in which she informed the public on the positives and negatives of the territorial status versus statehood.
She was also newspaper co-owner of Anchorage Daily Times renamed Anchorage Times alongside her husband Robert Atwood.
Atwood was a supporter and benefactor of the arts in Anchorage. She held the presidential appointment as Alaska’s representative on the advisory board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
The Atwood Concert Hall at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts in Anchorage was named in her honor and their largest venue with over 2,000 seats.
The Anchorage Museum named the Bob and Evangeline Atwood Alaska Center after her and her husband.
Evangeline Atwood died in 1987.
